Prize-winning Poet

Congratulations to Sara K. for winning
FIRST PLACE in the poetry category
of the Pewaukee Women's Club Student Writing Contest!

The poem she composed reflects her interpretation
of the Edgar Allen Poe short story, The Masque of the Red Death.

(posted by Mrs. Whelan)

I Had to Go Back

The clock in the corner
the walls painted black.
The moments I’d had there;
I had to go back.

Red panes of the windows,
not even a crack.
The things that I’d seen there;
I had to go back.

The undisturbed flooring,
no signs of attack.
The things that I’d touched there;
I had to go back.

That happy room feeling,
of that it did lack.
The things that I'd felt there,
I had to go back.

The wraiths in the corners,
all blacker than black.
The things that I’d feared there;
I had to go back.

The screams that I’d heard there,
a painful soundtrack.
The things that I’d heard there
I had to go back.

  1. Sara, this poem is inspiring and I really like the symbolism behind the simple phrases. Good job!

  3. I like the patterns used, but more so I enjoy the change in emotions. Each symbolic visualization (window paints, walls, sounds, floors, and corners) added a different effect to how this narrator feels. Not only do they feel disturbed, but in my mind, they have the panicked feeling working its way into their minds and giving them this untrustworthy characteristic. I like how much symbolism and character you built into such a short piece!
